Online course dropout: why enrollment does not predict who finishes

Enrollment in an online course measures interest, not commitment. Real dropout gets decided in the first few weeks, when a student does or does not reach an early content milestone. Measuring completion by cohort, not as one aggregate number, shows whether the problem is the content, the pace, or the communication during the course.

An online education institute in Peru measures its campaign’s success by how many people enroll in a course. It launches with 500 sign-ups, the campaign gets marked a success, and nobody looks at the number again until the end, when 80 people are still active. Enrollment said there was interest. It said nothing about whether the course would actually help those people.

Signing up for a course is a decision that takes seconds: a form, sometimes a payment, done. Finishing it is a different matter: it requires the content to deliver value quickly, the pace to fit the real time a person has available during the week, and something to bring them back when life gets in the way. Most online education reports look only at the first metric, because it arrives first and is the easiest one to show off in a campaign. The second one is what says whether the business actually works.

At an online education client we operate in Peru, that link was missing: the enrollment system and the course-progress system lived on separate platforms, so nobody had, in one place, who signed up and who was actually progressing module by module. Without that link, any acquisition campaign gets measured against a number that says nothing about whether the product is working.

Where to look for dropout, in order

  1. Measure completion by starting cohort, not as a cumulative number. Group students by the date they started the course and check what share reached module 3, the midpoint and the end. A historical average hides whether the most recent cohort is doing worse than earlier ones.
  2. Find the exact module where the curve drops. Most online course dropout happens early, in the first two or three weeks, not near the end. That first stretch is where a student decides whether the format works for them.
  3. Before automating a reminder, confirm the cause. If a student stopped progressing because they forgot, a message brings them back. If they stopped because a module was hard or demanded more time than they have, the same reminder puts them back against the obstacle and speeds up the dropout.
  4. Connect enrollment and progress in a single profile. Without that link, any intervention arrives late or reaches the wrong person.

It is the same mistake behind treating an entry event as if it were the final result, the same one we unpack in the lifecycle-stage retention framework: the real result sits several steps past the entry point, and it needs its own metric to be visible. It is also the work we do in growth for businesses operating in Peru: connecting the data that already exists, instead of stacking more acquisition campaigns on top of a funnel that is already losing people before the halfway point.

If your online course report has sign-ups but no completion rate by cohort, you are probably measuring how many people came in, not how many people the course actually helped.
